Major stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Gboko, Buruku and Tarka local government areas referred to as Jemgbagh, today pledged to support Governor Samuel Ortom’s re-election bid.

Jemgbagh Elders

They made the pledge at the residence of Senator Iyorchia Ayu in Gboko during a meeting with the Governor.

Those who spoke included Simeon Tarka, Lydia Luga, Timothy Sule, Dr. Lava Dzever, Joseph Mbaume and Umaru Aga.

Their opinions were summarised by Mr. Samuel Tsumba, chairman of the Jemgbagh PDP Elders’ Forum.

They agreed with the presentation by elders from the MINDA political axis that all elected governors in Benue state usually serve for two terms except those whose tenures were truncated by the military.

Representatives of the elders, Messrs Samuel Utoo, Thomas Ano and Rebecca Apedzan handed over the governor to the stakeholders as their preferred aspirant.

Governor Ortom solicited support for reelection in 2019.
He stated that his first tenure was characterized by several challenges including lack of funds, natural disasters and insecurity which he was gradually overcoming.

He noted that in spite of the challenges, he had recorded milestones in the health, agriculture, education and rural development sectors, adding that he would do more if elected.

The Governor stressed that the attacks on several communities across the state were beyond grazing but rather the continuation of the 1804 conquest and the occupation agenda of Jihadists.

He insisted that unfortunately, the attackers have found collaborators in some of the leaders in the state who have vowed to remove him from office by all means.

Governor Ortom stated that more than 560 people have been killed by Fulani herdsmen militia while half of Gwer West, Makurdi, Guma, Logo and Kwande local government areas have been sacked by the attackers since January, 2018.

He appealed to other aspirants to eschew violence as they solicit the mandate of the people, pointing out that peace should be the ultimate desire of everyone.
