The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu is currently enmeshed in monumental fraud, which if not checked, may not only frustrate current efforts of the Enugu State government to reposition the institution but could also see to the final collapse of the school.
Investigations reveal that irregularities and poor infrastructure in the school coupled with massive exploitation of students have plunged the school into the muddy waters of fraud.
It was gathered that the school management has for some years now, placed a N40,000 compulsory accommodation fee for all fresh students even when the institution has little or no capacity to provide accommodation.
The money running into billions of naira has continued to breed crisis in IMT as tongues are wagging over the fraud which is no longer hidden.
Our source disclosed that the N40,000 was once refunded to very few students after a major protest that almost grounded the school.
Students and parents who spoke to our reporter in Enugu condemned the compulsory fee which they described as daylight robbery by the IMT management.
Currently, over 5000 new students are being forced to pay the accommodation fee of N40,000 each even when the school has less than 1500 bed spaces in decrepit hostels.
Any defaulting student it was gathered, who doesn’t pay will not have his or her file signed by the academic adviser for him to get his registration number. “You are not even a student if you don’t pay the money and it doesn’t matter whether you have an alternative accommodation or not. At the end, less than a quarter of fresh students don’t get accommodation from the school and that is the end of the story. It’s a shame.”
Regularly, IMT students are ripped off through illegal levies which includes what they call Sanitation fee of about N3000, journal fee N5000, among other numerous levies.
Our source revealed that during exam, students who fail to present any of the receipts is booked for misconduct and at the end of the day, pay extra N3, 000 to appear before Exam Misconduct Committee.
While there is a department in this same school that has the duty of keeping the environment clean and taking care of sanitation in IMT, N3 million is paid monthly to a company believed to be owned by the rector and his cronies to clear grasses and overall sanitation within the campus.
Just last Christmas, on December 25th to be precise, a strange fire gutted the Achike Udenwa building, Accountancy Department’ housing over 1000 computers.
The IMT community does not believe the fire was real but a smoke screen to cart away over 1000 computers donated by the former Imo State governor. The school claimed that fire from unknown source burnt down the building on Christmas Day.
Yet, with all the alleged fraud in the institution, the school authority still finds it difficult to augment the government subventions to pay salary as at when due. Also, for more than five years the Campus 3 of the school has not seen electricity, making life more unbearable for students.
The IMT Rector, Professor Augustine Nweze, when contacted on phone, did not deny any of the allegations but merely said that the issue of N40,000 compulsory accommodation fee had been resolved.
Reacting to the development, a former guber candidate under Progressive People Alliance, PPA, Hon. Okolie John Martins said, “It’s a total blunder and surprising that it’s happening under the leadership of his excellency, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He is a man I know personally. He is on the road and on the streets to deliver good governance to people.
“This is the first time I am hearing this. After paying school fees, the students will be asked to pay for accommodation that they will never get. We are talking about hostel that will not accommodate up to 1000 students, but they told 5000 students to pay N40, 000 each. Check the economic situation, check the civil servants that are paying the money and at the end of the day nothing will happen.
“I am of the opinion that a capable hand to handle the school should be sent. From little enquiry, I was informed that the hostel was contracted to a private individual to renovate and recoup the money. We are talking about education, the only basic empowerment and foundation that we need to give to our children. An urgent action needs to be taking concerning the issue.”
